About Charles Thompson, FAIA, IALD, LEED AP, LC
Charles Thompson has been practicing lighting design for over 30 years. Recent projects include Austin's new Formula 1 Racetrack, Austin City Hall, and a variety of high-end custom residential projects. Charles is a registered architect and interior designer, and a professional member of International Association of Lighting Designer. He was recently elevated to the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows, one of the highest honors achievable by an architect.

He designed an alternative delivery system for specifying and bidding lighting products that provides better quality and significant value for owners and architects. He published these guidelines in the International Association of Lighting Designers Guidelines for Specification Integrity, which he co-wrote.

Charles developed a method of alternative compliance for exterior lighting restrictions in the City of Austin that raised city leaders’ understanding of lighting issues and will protect against light pollution and trespass, while preserving architects’ opportunities to create rich exterior environments.

Project credits include collaborations with Lake Flato Architects, Overland Partners, HOK, HKS, Beck Architecture, Larry Speck, Morris Architects, Graeber, Simmons & Cowan, and Page Southerland Page.

Three of his public projects have been included on the national AIA Committee on the Environment Top Ten Green Projects list. His projects have been featured in Architecture, Texas Architect, and other publications and have been honored with over 30 design awards from local, state and national programs, including AIA.

Charles created and teaches a first-of-its-kind Advanced Lighting Design class at the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture that provides students with lighting skills that will have a profoundly positive influence on all their future projects.

A frequent speaker, Thompson has shared his knowledge through programs at AIA Austin, Texas Society of Architects, Illuminating Engineering Society and the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD), as well as through continuing education programs across a wide variety of other local, regional, national, and international venues. In addition, his articles on a range of lighting design topics have been featured in numerous publications including Texas Architect, Architectural Lighting Magazine, Architectural Record, and Greensource Magazine.

As principal of ARCHILLUME LIGHTING DESIGN, Charles K. Thompson has helped architects and owners realize innovative lighting design solutions to enhance award-winning architecture; educated practitioners and public officials; and elevated and defended his profession’s role as an important, integral asset to design.

Charles Thompson’s lighting design practice embraces education, mentoring, and advocacy as a way to share his expertise as part of a collaborative design process.

Thompson is a 1981 graduate of The University of Texas School of Architecture with a Bachelor of Architecture. He is licensed in the State of Texas as an architect and interior designer.
PRACTICE
In 2009 Thompson helped bring national attention to, and ultimately defeat legislation in Texas that would have unfairly limited architects’ access to qualified lighting designers. His efforts led to unprecedented response from lighting professionals across the U.S. As a result of this effort he is now participating in developing an international credentialing standard for lighting professionals.

He is working with an IALD committee to develop international curriculum standards for lighting design courses to be integrated into established university architecture programs. The information will be distributed via a website, which will provide course outlines, sample assignments, and grading matrices to any educator in the world.
